Oleksa Novakivsky Museum
National Museum Department

Description:
The museum was opened in the former art studio of Oleksa Novakivsky, the prominent Ukrainian artist. The building itself is a unique historic and cultural monument. Made of red bricks, sustained in neo Romanesque style, the house (the former villa and art studio of Jan Styka, the famous polish artist) was built at the end of XIX c. by the well-known Lviv architect Y. Zaharievych. The last Lviv period of his life Oleksa Novakivsky spent just here.
In 1972, March, on the occasion of the artist's centenary, widely celebrated by UNESKO, the museum was opened in the former artist's studio.

In the first exposition hall the early creative work of the artist is presented. "The Self-portrait" (1898) shown in the hall is considered to be one of the first artist's works. Here O. Novakivsky pictured himself as a young man full of energy. One can see will power and rebellious character in his eyes. The ochre and brown colours create the background for the bright artist's face with the white collar. There are also several plein-air studies painted in temperamental manner and prompting the artist's admiration for impressionistic art.

The composition "Lost Hopes" ("Liberation", 1903-1908) is one of the early artist's masterpieces. It is notable for its intrigue and virtuosity.

The picture "Awakening" (1914) comes from that period as well. It is distinguished by the great patriotic idea and the allegoric image of Ukraine and its tragic fortune.

The mature period in the artist's creative work is represented in the second hall. Two monumental pictures "Art" and "Science" (1914-1918) are the best in this part of the exposition. They were painted on the order of Lviv Music Institute after M. Lysenko. The allegoric image of Mother-Ukraine inspiring Her children to studies and creation is the base of the composition. These pictures were innovatory in Ukrainian art of the beginning of XX c.

And the picture "Dovbush — Mountains Ruler" is considered to be the masterpiece of Oleksa Novakivsky. In this composition one can feel the impressionistic peculiarities of late mature period in the artist's creative work. Tension, dynamics of lines, violent colours greatly impress the visitors. His last work "Self-potrait with Bunch of Flowers" is the dramatic confession to the future generations (1933). All the exhibits in the exposition present the artist's creative work as an exclusive and distinctive phenomenon in the world culture.
