LEOPOLD LEVYTSKY Memorial Museum of Arts
National Museum Department

Description:
Leopold Levytsky Memorial Museum of Arts belongs to a chain of Lviv Memorial museums which represent separate artists heritage, and at the same time they reflect the epoch during which those masters lived and created. The museum is a part of Lviv National Museum named after Andrey Sheptytsky structure, and it was founded on April 11, 1984 year, thanks to Genya Levytska — the late artist's wife. The Levytskys family settled in this house in 1946 year. Since then many Lviv outstanding artists visited them — M. Vodzitska, Y. Muzyka, R. Turyn, R. and M. Selsky, O. Lishchynsky, O. Shatkivsky, V. Manastyrsky. They were also visited by other artists who were not so popular yet. A lot of Lviv artists believe that they are his disciples — I. Ostafiychuk, Y. Beznisko, B. Pilulytsky, Z. Ketsalo, V. Patyk, T. Bryzh, V. Buhlak, H. Levytska.

The museum's zest is that exposition presents works which represent actual tendencies of the European avant-garde. First engravings of Leopold Levytsky can be compared with graphic compositions of A. Matis, F. Lezhe, P. Picasso. Leopold Levytsky is a Lviv outstanding graphic artist and painter of the ХХ century, his creative work had a great influence not only on Lviv art. He was a cofounder of so called Krakow Group — the most famous artistic group in Poland in 1930-es years of avant-garde style and its activity became determinant for Polish art of the ХХ century.

The museum's exposition is located in three rooms and in a foreroom of the artist's dwelling. It shows the artist's talent in its full versatility, reproduces unique atmosphere of the environment when L. Levytsky lived and worked and enlightens creative biography of the artist in details. The exposition presents works of all creative periods which were made with the help of different graphic techniques (etching, monotype, autolithography). There are also works of different painting genres.

Two memorial rooms contain the artist's furniture, private things, in particular printing press, which printed the majority of the artist's engravings and documents. There are also interesting models of folk art in Leopold Levytsky's collection — wooden crosses and ceramics (Hutsulian, Podillya etc.). This exposition is especially valuable while dismantling expositions of folk art in almost all Lviv museums.

Leopold Levytsky's graphic work original aspect is his picture postcards, he annually greeted his friends with them, some of such postcards are represented in the exposition. Such a direction of the artist's activity formed a basis of the contest of the New Year-Christmas postcard which was held in the museum in November-December, 2010 year (in memory of Leopold Levytsky). The museum's scientific works collection contains a chain of subject lessons and lectures, dedicated to some aspects of the artist's creative work and to general artistic problems. Lessons' subjects are fundamentally connected with such school subjects as History, Integrated course of Art, Fine Arts and World Belles-Lettres.

The exposition of Leopold Levytsky Memorial Museum of Art is very interesting for visitors, they can get acquainted with the artist's masterpiece, his daily life and the epoch when he lived and created.
