National Museum Department

Description:
The standing museum exposition reveals the most important sides of Olena Kulchytska's creative work. It was opened in 2007 to the 130th birthday anniversary of the prominent graphic artist, master of applied arts, ethnographer and folk arts researcher. The museum is situated in the building the artist had lived and created since 1938. It was the time the family moved from Przemysl to Lviv.

Painting, print and book graphic arts; Ukrainian carpets and furniture made to the projects of Olena and Olga Kulchytski; the folk ceramics collection are exhibited in four rooms. One can also see the artist's instruments — the printing press, chisels, the loom.

Vienna period in the artist's creative work is presented by exclusive works — porcelain enamels. It was the beginning of this technique in Ukraine. During 1905-1907 O. Kulchytska mastered the secrets of chipped enamel at the art studio of professor A. Shtark. She made a number of elegant works in modern style — triptychs "The Seasons", "Folk Art"; the copper box decorated with enamel and, also, a number of female adornments. She got the highest reward of Vienna Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the box in 1907. At the same time she created her first white and black and coloured graphic works. There are the following works in museum exposition: "Harvesters", "The Young Herd", "The Harvest", "Over the Stream", "The Young Hutsul" (1903-1906).

The oil painting is presented in the artist's studio and in her personal room. One can see the pictures, painted during the plein-air in Kosiv and Domazhyr village near Lviv. For the first time the sketches from the Adriatic trip (1911) are shown to the visitors. Here the oil picture "St. Virgin "The Golden Ear" is exhibited — the sample of innovatory searches in Ukrainian modern style.

In the artist's personal room the interior of her time has been preserved. The museum interior was formed according to the projects of Olena and Olga Kulchytski. One can admire furniture in Hutsul style, carpets, embroidery and ceramics.

Olena Kulchytska's work in applied arts is very important in her activities. She displayed herself as an innovator with her own aesthetic program. About eighty original carpets were made during 1909-1938, and, also numerous projects of other elements of inside decor.
