Museum of Olha Basarab

Description:

Founded 8 Sep, 1998, the museum is located in the building of a local school # 49.

Olha Basarab (née Levytska) was a famous social and political activist, and also a remarkable participant in Ukrainian national liberation movement in the 20th century. She was born 1 Sep, 1889, in Pidhoroddya village (nowadays — Ivano-Frankivsk region) in the famous Galician family of Levytsky. Educated abroad (Czechia, Poland, Austria-Hungary), she worked in Lviv and Vienna. During her life, she was an activist in numerous social and political organizations (Sich, Prosvita, Sokil-Batko, The Union of Ukrainian Women), founded the first women's platoon in the Legion of Ukrainian Sich Riflemen; was scouting abroad for Ukrainian People's Republic; worked for Ukrainian Military Organization inside the country, etc. After being arrested and interrogated by the Polish police, she was hanged with an embroidered towel in her cell (13 Feb, 1924); burried in Yaniv cemetery in Lviv.

The museum exhibition consists of several sections where Olha Basarab's life periods are represented: childhood years and family, youth, social activism (underground movements in particular), death and posthumous honour.

Here you can have a look at a sculpture bust of this remarkable Ukrainian figure, historical documents and photographs telling the story of her life. The worth seeing exhibits are some personal possessions of Olha: a brooch, a candlestick, a ceramic icon, some furniture belonged to the family, and also a clepsydra (water clock) dedicated to the activist's death.
