Mizhgirya district

The district is situated in the north-east of Transcarpathia region within the boundaries of Watershed ridge and Polonyna Ridge, Near-Watershed Gorgany. It is characterized by the low-mountain, rolling terrain with prevailing altitudes of 650-900 m a.s.l. The highest mountain peaks in the district are Strymba (1719 m), Kamianka (1587 m), Magura (1517 m), Borzhava mountain range with its peak Mt. Stiy (1677 m). Over 60% of its territory is covered by forests, its majority being conifers (spruce, fir, mountain pine); among deciduous trees — beech, sycamore, ash. Through the district run rivers Tereblia and Rika — the tributaries of river Tisza. The most famous hydrological natural monument is Synevyr Lake. The district is rich in mineral bicarbonate-chloride-calcic waters (53 springs explored), the most popular of which are those in Soymiv, Vuchkove, Kolochava, Verkhni Bystry, Kelechyn.

The administrative centre — village Mizhgirya.

Mizhgirya district is ecologically one of the cleanest parts of Ukraine, abundant in mushrooms and berries. Annually 120 tons of Carpathian porcini and 40 tons of berries are being laid in. Until 2010 in the district there was also a wood processing factory “Swedwood”, the subsidiary of the world’s most famous home furniture retailer IKEA.

Like in the neighbouring Volovets district , in Mizhgirya district, fragments of the Arpad Line have survived till nowadays attracting those interested in contemporary fortifications. Nearby Synevyr Lake there is an area of densely situated shelters, as well as 3 bunkers and a pillbox at the confluence of rivers Ozernyanka and Tereblya.

In the district there are famous ski resorts — Pylypets, Podobovets, Izky, Verkhniy Studeny and a balneal resort Soymy. In 34 settlements out of 44 there are wooden churches, both old and newly built. “Young” Mizhgirya churches are quite interesting too, since even in the 20th c. they were built according to antique patterns. In Mizhgirya district hiking and cycling routes to The Borzhava Mountain Valley, Watershed ridge and Gorgany mountain range begin. Major part of the district’s territory belongs to the Nature Reserve Fund of Ukraine.
