The museum exposition was formed on the base of the former Uzhgorod district museum collections. In spring of 1947 it was removed to one of the oldest historical and architectural monuments of Transcarpathian region — Uzhgorod Castle (13th-18th с.), nowadays it is located just here.
In 1950 the museum was enlarged by valuable archaeological and historacal collections from the former Mukacheve museum of T. Lehotsky.
Today the museum exposition numbers about 115 thousand exhibits.
Its archaeological collections (bronze treasures, numismatic collection, ancient armament, etc) are worth special attention.
There is also a rare collection of manuscript books and books printed early (15th-18th с.).
The furniture (18th-19th с.) exhibition, regional folk clothes, folk music instruments, etc are also worth seeing.
At the castle's basements there are exhibition rooms dedicated to the history of the Uzhgorod castle. A wine sampling room is waiting for the visitors as well.
