YAVORIVSKY National Park

The park was established in 1998 on the basis of the landscape park (with the same name), and surrounding areas of Starychivsky and Maherivsky military and forestries. The purpose of the park's establishment is preservation, restoration and rational use of typical and unique steppe landscapes and other natural systems within the Main European Watershed, having an important environmental, aesthetic and recreational value.

Yavorivsky National Park is located in Yavoriv district, Lviv region. The total area of the national park is 7078,6 hectares. Its territory is a part of Ukrainian Roztochya — narrow range of hills 75 km long. These territories have the features of three geographic regions — the Carpathians, Polissya and Podillya.

In the south-eastern part of Yavorivsky National Park there lies the main European watershed. Rivers, originating here, belong to the basins of two seas — the Black Sea and the Baltic. In particular, these are such rivers as Stavchanka and Stara Rika (left tributaries of Vereshchytsya river), Derevyanka and Svynya (Western Bug basin); Vereshchytsya river flows here, falling into Dniester river.

Due to the geographical location, Yavorivsky National Park has a diverse and rich relief. The highest peak is a nameless height of 403,6 m located near the village of Mlynky. Other peaks: Bulava (397 m), Kubyn (378 m), Bereznyaky (378 m), Boltova Hora (360 m), Vivsyana Hora (387 m). Hillocks with massive limestones and sandstones are considered to be interesting both for tourists and scientists. Small karst caves are spread in this area.

The area of Yavorivsky National Park is also rich in forests — hornbeam-oak, pine-oak, pine and alder lowland forests are mostly spread here. The most common trees are: sessile oak, juniper, beech, pine, fir, spruce.

Flora of the park is represented by 700 species of vascular plants. 18 of them are listed into the Red Book of Ukraine, in particular: Northern firmoss, White Helleborine, Narrow-leaved Helleborine, Bird's-nest Orchid, Lesser Twayblade, lesser butterfly-orchid, Greater Butterfly-orchid, early coralroot, lady's-slipper orchid, common snowdrop, Spring Snowflake, Turk's cap lily, marsh valerian, etc. Moreover, approximately 200 medicinal plant species grow here.

Local fauna is characterized by rich diversity. The park is inhabited by nearly 290 species of vertebrates. 48 mammals, 200 birds, 6 reptiles, 11 amphibians, 24 fish species are under special supervision here. The fauna of insects is unique. Such species as: musk beetle, large carder bee, Old World Swallowtail, Clouded Apollo, the poplar admiral, Purple Emperor, Scarce Heath, Kentish Glory, dark crimson underwing, Small Emperor Moth, Tau Emperor are listed into the Red Book of Ukraine .

Six ecotrails are laid through the territory of the park (Vereshchytsia, The path of Ivan Franko, Doves, Lelekhivka etc.). Commercial fishery and hunting are prohibited in this part of the park. Also, tourists are offered with 4 combined bus and walking routes: Stradch — Black lakes, From Yaniv to Krekhiv, Spovid' Chasu (confession of time) (Sheptytsky family's marital nest), Yavoriv military training ground — Past and Present. In addition, thematic excursions are of great interest, for instance: Yavorivskyy National Park's World of Orchids, Rare plants of Roztochia, Medicinal plants of Roztochia, Bees give you a good health, etc.

There are fixed and arranged recreation centres:

  • Lelekhivka: there are arranged places for public rest, summer holiday sheds, barbecue, fishing bridges. Also, there are equipped playgrounds. One can walk along the nature-literary route The path of Ivan Franko.

  • Vereshchytsia: there are summer holiday sheds, barbecues. There are two ponds, one adapted for swimming, another is equipped with bridges for amateur fishing. There is an arranged beach on the pond, adapted for swimming, mooring places, working rescue post, in addition, one can go boating here. For children there is a defined place for swimming and a playground. One can ride on a cart or visit other routes here. There is a stationary recreation building.

  • Seredniy Horb: located in 15 km from Lviv. It is a place of old farmsteads and houses of foresters in Polyana tract. There are alluring hills, also, there is a lake, created on the area of 2 hectares, surrounded with isolated centuries-old trees. The area is good for walking, having picnics, gathering berries and mushrooms.

  • Kozulka: holiday recreation centre. It is a comfortable, mostly dry area with a good microclimate. Two reservoirs are located on Kyslyanka river. There are numerous monuments, historic settlements near Krekhiv monastery.

There are two museums in Yavorivsky National Park: Antiquities Museum in Oselya Roztochia and Historical Museum of Yaniv Town. Different workshops are held here, in particular, on painting Yavoriv toys and reed mace weaving.


Routes, offered by Yavorivskyy National Park:

Stradch — Black lakes
(bus transfer — 18 km, walking part — 2 km, duration — 6 hours)
Historical walking tour on the surroundings of Stradecka mountain: viewing the scenery of Roztochia, the Assumption of Our Lady church and Church of God's Mother of Immovable Wall; common prayer at the tomb of martyr Mykola Konrad; Stations of the Cross with Jerusalem Indulgence; travel through the mazes of Stradecka cave, where Pechersk Lavra and Church of God's Mother of Immovable Wall were located, during the 11-13th centuries. The path of Ivan Franko natural and literary walking tour: stops with sculptures of the literary characters by Ivan Franko, White Rock tract, picturesque cascade of the Black lakes.

From Yaniv to Krekhiv
(bus transfer — 52 km, walking part — 3-4 km, duration — 6 hours)
Attractions: Royal mountain, Main European Watershed, Basilian Monastery of St. Nicholas in Krekhiv, the Transfiguration Church and miraculous icon of St. Nicholas and God's Mother of Verkhrata, secular linden valley, Stations of the Cross on Pobiyna Mountain; Cliff of Tymosh rock monastery, holy spring with a chapel devoted to God's Mother.

Yavoriv military training ground — Past and Present

Introduction to the history of Yavoriv military range creation. Burial of German prisoners in the village Vereshchytsya, blindage of Mytrofan Nedekin and view of Roztochia landscape's panorama, shot church in the village of Velyka Vyshenka, viewing of shooting ranges, trek to seven springs — territory of the deported village of Kurnyky; Shklo (Glass) sanatorium (spotted deer enclosure, Naftusia well-room of mineral water); history of the spring of princess Paraskeva.

Ecological walking trails:

Lelekhivka
(length — 4,5 km, duration — 3 hours)
The route starts near the village of Lelekhivka, on the border of Yavorivskyy National Park and Roztochia Nature Reserve and includes 13 observation stops. The purpose of it is exploring unique and typical natural complexes of Roztochia, typical representatives of flora and fauna; eco-oriented rest. The route is laid through different forest types. At different times of the year, one can see rare and interesting species of flora: February daphne, Northern firmoss, Marsh Grass-of-Parnassus, snowdrop anemone, Turk's cap lily, yellow iris, etc. Tourists have a chance to see rare species of orchid family: Bird's-nest Orchid, western marsh orchid, lesser butterfly-orchid, watch the colony of coastal swallows, buzzard's nest, common kingfisher; occasionally meet white-tailed eagle and black stork. There are arranged rest places and spots for making fire. Picturesque sceneries of lakes will be a pleasure to the eye and the forest will present you with mushrooms, berries and wholesome air.

Doves
(length — 2,5 km, duration — 2 hours)
The route lies through pine and beech forests, bends around the complex of picturesque limestone rock outputs with small caves. A typical relief of Roztochia can be seen here — hills, cut by deep ravines. On the trail one can see an interesting Carpathian fern — Polypodium, mighty pines, overgrown with hops, the common toothwort, Bird's-nest Orchid, meet great spotted woodpecker, its workshop — 'Woodpecker's forge'. On a picturesque glade there are cozy resting places where one can hide him/herself from bad weather, make the fire, drink water from springs and try some autumn fruit.

The path of Ivan Franko
(length — 2 km, duration — 1,5 hours)
The route is equipped with memorial stops, decorated with wooden sculptures of Franko's literary characters. The trail is designed, primarily, for the author's fans, as well as students, who have already studied or will study the creativity of Ivan Franko. On this route one will be met by the steppe guest of Roztochia — the White Rock mountain, will see a beautiful cascade of Black Lakes, as far as water here has healing properties.

Vereshchytsia
(length — 4,5 km, duration — 3 hours)
The route covers the entire spectrum of natural complexes of Roztochia, from water meadows to watersheds. Here is the habitat of rare plant species: Turk's cap lily, White Helleborine, Bird's-nest Orchid, Broad-leaved Helleborine, Moldavian Monkshood, Northern firmoss. Among tourist attractions there are — Pryslin Mountain (the place of ancient-medieval settlement), rocky limestones, Vovcha Yama ancient well, burial of the German war prisoners of the Second World War. The trail ends in the recreational area of the park, where wooden sheds are installed, with places for making fire. There are two recreational ponds: one adapted for swimming and boating, the other — for fishing.

By the Main European Watershed
(length — 4,5 km, duration — 3 hours)
The route lies through the so-called 'spine' of the Central European watershed, where the rivers of Roztochia region (Fiyna, Kyslyanka, Vereshchytsia, Stavchanka, etc.) start and carry their waters to the Black and Baltic seas. Walking along this route, tourists will be able to see the picturesque locality of Ukrainian Roztochia, visit the highest point of the watershed (382,4 m), see the cascade of ponds of Mlynky fishing industry. Also, the tourists are interested in ancient roads, which earlier ran in the area of the watershed (near the source of Fiyna river), in particular, Dubrovytsia, Levurda, Provala, Brovar, they are attracted by the roads running through the watershed — Kyslyanka, Fiyna, Vyshenka, along the territory of the modern village of Mlynky.
In Mochara tract, at the end of ecological walking trail, tourists can get acquainted with the area where the former Courtyard was located, visit Ethnographic Museum 'Life of inhabitants of Roztochia region', visit the arboretum. There are arranged recreation places: summer vacation shelters, spots for making fire.
