Marko Cheremshyna Literature and Memory Museum

Description:
The museum was opened in 1949, July 17, in the writer's own house. First, his wife (N. Semaniuk) was the museum manager till 1974. It was the time when the first museum exposition was created. The famous Ukrainian artists illustrated it — V. Kasiyan and O. Kulchytska were among them.

The museum exposition contains about 400 exhibits — photos, documents, personal things, the writer's library. They represent the events of his life and creative work. The visitors will be interested to see the writer's study room with its modesty and simplicity. Here he worked and greeted his friends. There are also several rooms for temporary exhibitions.

Marko Cheremshyna (Ivan Semaniuk) was born in 1874, June 13, in Kobaky village (nowadays, Kosiv district). He spent his childhood with his grandfather and grandmother, "among folk songs, fairy-tales and pipes". Since 1889 he studied in a secondary school in Kolomyja where he got close to Vasyl Stefanyk and Les Martovych. They became his best friends. At that time he began to write, and in 1889 his first story "Kermanych (Leader)" was printed in the local newspaper under a pen name Marko Cheremshyna.

In 1896 he graduated from the secondary school and entered Vienna University law faculty. In 1901 his first collection of short stories "Karby" was published. It contained 15 short stories that described local country life. In 1901 Marko Cheremshyna graduated from the University, and in 1912, on the invitation of V. Stefanyk, he opened his office as a lawyer in Snyatyn. Country life topics were typical for the second collection (1925) of the writer as well. And the third book of short stories was published after M. Cheremshyna's death, in 1929.

The writer's works were published more than 30 times. His short stories were translated into German, Czech, Moldavian, Bulgarian, Latvian and Byelorussian languages. On the initiative of UNESKO Marko Cheremshyna centenary was widely celebrated in 1974, June 13.
