Oravský Podzámok

Oravský Podzámok is a village in northern Slovakia, Dolný Kubín District. The village has the population about 1300 people and is located at the foot of a rock (112 m high) with Orava castle, one of the most famous castles in Slovakia, built on the top.

According to historical researches, the castle was built on that rock several centuries earlier than the settlement around it was established. Orava as an inhabited place was first mentioned in the documents in 1265. At that time Hungarian king Béla IV settled the duties and privileges of the royal property in the region of Liptov. Customs points in Tvrdošín settlement were mentioned in that document. The border customs duty (for crossing the main trade route across Orava valley to Poland) was one thirtieth. Merchants from Kingdom of Hungary used that route for import of cloth, salt, lead, etc.

The other written document from 1276 confirms that present-day area of Oravský Podzámok was a settled place at that time. King Béla IV granted Žilina and Teplička towns to the grandchildren of Zvolen governor in exchange for Orava castle. The castle as historically important object meant not only fortifications with surrounding area, but also probably a customs point, several historically documented settlements of the upper class representatives and the whole Orava territory. Oravský Podzámok as a village was first mentioned in 1559.
