Žilina district is one of 11 districts of Žilina region in Slovakia. The total area is 815.1 km², the population is more than 158,000 people and the population density is 194.79 inhabitants per km². The district capital is Žilina city. There are 5 urban-type settlements and 50 villages in the district. Untill 1918 it was the part of Trenčín administrative region (Hungary). The considerable part of the district is situated in the Váh river valley. Due to the high level of urban development Žilina is one of the most important districts in the country.
