The Museum House of Yuriy Fedkovych

Description:

The museum is located in the family house of a famous writer from Bukovyna Yuriy Fedkovych, where he was born and raised. Nowadays it's a part of Chernivtsi museum of Y. Fedkovych.

Osyp Dominik Hordynsky de Fedkovych (became Yuriy in adulthood) was born 8 August, 1834, in Putyla village in a family of a public servant. Educated in Chernivtsi, he was enlisted in the Austrian army. Surprisingly, he wrote his first works in German, and even his first Ukrainian language poems were written down using Latin alphabet. He served as a Vogt (analogue of a mayor) in Putyla and later worked as an editor in Lviv and Chernivtsi. Yuriy Fedkovych died 11 January, 1888.

The museun exposition is placed in the houses nearby the main building. The wooden building was reconstructed in 1974 (the previous one burnt down). It consists of three rooms: a siny (local type of the entrance hall), a sitting room and a living room. Among the exhibits, there are Hutsul everyday items, clothing and artworks. The Fedkovych family owned furniture items which could be seen those times as signs of nobility: tiled stove, well-made furniture pieces, a big dining table, carved decorations, and so on. The next section displays things from the period of the author's life and work in Putyla, his time in the Austrian army and his work in Chernivtsi.

There's also an authentic well in the yard preserved from the times when Y. Fedkovych was living in the house. The sculpture bust of the writer was placed nearby.

Nowadays the museum became one of the significant cultural sites of the region. The most important annual event out there is the writer's anniversary held the first week in August and called 'Shovkova Kosytsya' (Silky Braid). The event is the time for artworks of local artists and craftsmen to be presented to the public: you can see there embroidery, carving, Easter eggs (painted eggs), paintings, carpets, rushniks (traditional towels) and much more.
