The Museum of Stepan Bandera

Description:

The museum was opened 4 January, 1999, in the building of Lviv National Agrarian University (LNAU), which S. Bandera attended as a student.

Stepan Bandera was born in 1909 in Stary Uhryniv village. His father was a Greek-Catholic priest. First, Stepan attended Stryj preparatory school, then — he studied in the department of agriculture and forestry at Lviv Polytechnic University. At the same time with his university studies, he became an activist of 'Plast' organization, and of many more pro-Ukrainian groups (in particular, under the leadership of the Ukrainian Military Organization). Later, he became a member of OUN (Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists) and one of the most important figures for Ukrainian Liberation Movement in the 20th century. During his life, he was twice sentenced to the death penalty and was kept in the concentration camp. Stepan Bandera was killed in 1959 in Munich, where he had been living that time and where he was burried.

The museum exposition is placed in two rooms.

The fisrt one in the place for such exhibits as: the award collection from 1914-1952 (gathered by C. Pakholko), miniatures of the university building and the house of S. Bandera, a duplicate of the UPA uniform, a typewriter and some historical paintings (portraits in particular).

The second room displays photographs, documents and publications getting you to know the figure of S. Bandera, his family and public life. The period of his studies at the university (in the institution which now hosts this collection) is emphasized there; a great part of the exposition is also dedicated to his social and political life as a famous Ukrainian nationalist of his times.
