The museum was opened in 1993 in the house where Les Kurbas was born. In 2010 it was reorganized and got the modern name — Art Museum of Les Kurbas. The museum funds were supplemented with the materials about the theatrical and music life of Sambir.

The museum funds number about 5594 exhibits, and among them there are: the bust of L. Kurbas done by sculptor M. Posikira; the bas-relief made by sculptor E. Mysko; paintings of M. Yaremkiv, S. Muryash, Lesya Fryntsko, etc. There are also various photo documents about the local theatre.

Les Kurbas is known as a "man-theatre", a producer-reformer, a talented actor, translator, teacher. He was born in 1887, February 25, in Sambir town, in the family of famous Lviv actors. In 1907 he graduated from Ternopil high school and studied at Lviv and Vienna universities. When in Vienna, he attended lessons of theatrical art of Austrian actor J. Kainz.

Since 1912 Les Kurbas was the business manager and producer in "Hutsulsky theatre" of Hnat Khotkevych. Later he moved to Kyiv on the invitation of M. Sadovsky. In Kyiv Les Kurbas together with his supporters organized a large art association "Berezil" that existed till 1934.

"Berezil" was the so-called theatrical academy, that had no analogues. It was the large theatrical factory where future actors, producers, playwrights and artists studied. It was the "golden age" in Les Kurbas's life. But soon he was discharged, then condemned and sentenced to death.

In 1937 Les Kurbas together with other men of light and leading was shooted.
