The museum was founded in 1981 at the place of an ancient settlement. The skansen (open-air museum) covers an area of 6.9 ha, where 'micro villages' of four ethnographic regions of Ivano-Frankivsk (Pokuttia, Hutsul region, Boiky region, Opillia) are modelled. In 1994 the museum became a part of 'Ancient Halych' National Reserve.

The region of Pokuttia is represented with a hut taken from Torhovytsia village (Horodenka district). It's a typical local dwelling of the late 19th — early 20th centuries. The hut consists of three sections: a residential area — a siny (local type of entryway) and a komora (granary). The walls inside and outside are plastered with clay and whitewashed. The roof is four-sided, covered with rye straw. The building is of a chimney-less type.

The inerior was designed down to the smallest detail, and each item there has its own important function and place.

Hutsul district is one of the most intersting parts of Ivano-Frankivsk region. Local dwellings are spread around the mountains and valleys far from each other. This kind of isolation, together with constand danger of wild animals, made Hutsuls enclose the housing with a blind fence, which gave rise to a unique type of residential building called hrazhda, an encased structure with a house, outbuildings and a high fence around a stone-paved courtyard. The hrazhda from museum was originally located in Usteriky village (Verkhovyna district). It was built there in 1889 and is a typical local dwelling: three residential sections and a granary.

A typical house from Boiky region is one from Polianytsia village (Dolyna district). This three-roomed chimney-less building is dated back to 1878. One of its rooms displays the exposition of a local school called diakivka (diak's school). There's also a collection of folk fabric, embroidery and clothing.

Opillia district is represented with a hut with a barn from the mid. 19th century. The objects were brought to the museum from Vyktorov village (Halytsky district). Inside visitors can see the exposition of regional embroidery (mid. 20th cent.): men's and women's shirts, towels (rushnyks), tablecloths, blankets and national costumes (late 19th — early 20th centuries).

A quite interesting object in skansen is a wooden church of All Saints (early 20th century). It was relocated from Poplavnyky village (Halytsky district) and is remarkable for its specific architecture, which resembles a residential building. Such kind of structures were popular throghout the whole Galicia region.
