Nitra Region

Nitra Region boarders with Trnava Region in the West, Trenčín Region in the North, Banska Bystrica Region in the Northeast and Hungary in the Southeast and in the South.

Ethnic composition of Nitra Region consists mainly of Slovaks (70,9%). Hungarians occupy 26,6%. Czechs, Ukrainians, Romanians and Poles are less numerous communities. The representatives of each of these communities are no more than 0,6% from the total number of population in the region. Among religious communities Roman Catholics are the most numerous — 77,2%, Reformates — 4,7%, Lutherans — 3,4%.

Geographically Nitra Region consists of 7 districts. Nitra city with the population of 88,000 people is the administrative centre of the region.

The territory of Nitra Region is mainly located in the Eastern part of Danube lowland. The region is divided into two subregions: Danubian Plain and Rye Island in the South, Danube Upland — in the North, East and centre of the region. The following mountain ranges are located on the territory of the region: Považský Inovec — in the Northwest, Tribeč — to the north from Nitra, Pohronský Inovec — in the Northeast and Štiavnica Mountains — in the East. The main rivers of the region are: Danube — in the South, Vah — in the Northwest, Nitra — in the western and central parts of the region, Hron — in the East and Ipeľ — in the Southeast.
